Your Role: Designer III
The Designer III – Distribution is an experienced design professional responsible for managing complex distribution drawings and models, leading drawing coordination efforts, and ensuring quality and compliance with applicable standards. This role demonstrates proficient knowledge of distribution line design, advanced hardware and material selection, and applies governing codes and client standards independently across projects of varying complexity. The Designer III applies advanced distribution modeling and simulation tools, supports troubleshooting and design validation in the field, mentors junior designers, and manages small work packages to meet schedule and budget objectives. Client communication is handled directly on routine matters with moderate oversight.
What You’ll Do
Technical Design, Modeling & Tools:
Demonstrate proficient knowledge of distribution line design principles; apply this knowledge to lead and execute complex distribution design tasks independently.
Demonstrate proficient understanding of distribution industry hardware and materials; determine material selection based on lifecycle cost, reliability, and environmental impact; specify hardware for moderately complex applications; understand how to integrate new distribution infrastructure into the existing system.
Manage complex drawings and models for distribution systems; lead drawing coordination efforts and ensure quality and compliance with standards; apply advanced modeling tools and take ownership of drawing packages for major distribution projects.
Handle medium-complexity distribution design projects with minimal oversight; take ownership of technical quality and schedule adherence across assigned work.
Resolve highly complex highly complex distribution pole issues using knowledge of existing construction standard practices and experience
Demonstrate proficiency in single pole modeling software and analysis tools; demonstrate basic understanding of multiple pole analysis software.
Demonstrate basic understanding of foundational analysis software and design tools.
Demonstrate proficiency in using GIS systems to support complex distribution design and planning decisions; apply working knowledge of survey data products.
Apply Google Earth to support distribution planning tasks by measuring distances, evaluating elevation, and annotating maps; use historical imagery and 3D views to enhance site understanding.
Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) for documentation and communication; use Bluebeam for reviewing and marking up documents.
Codes, QC, Field & Project Delivery:
Follow and apply multiple governing codes and industry standards independently across projects.
Apply client standards with minimal oversight; interpret and implement them across varying project complexities.
Perform comprehensive quality checks on distribution design deliverables; ensure technical accuracy, adherence to client standards, and completeness before submission.
Participate in field visits with moderate interaction with distribution construction teams and clients; support troubleshooting and design validation in the field; communicate with construction personnel to clarify design intent; document field observations for design updates.
Manage small tasks or work packages to meet schedule and budget expectations; plan and execute assigned portions of work with attention to scope and deadlines; coordinate with team members to achieve project milestones; begin using project tracking tools to monitor progress.
Collaboration, Mentoring & Client Engagement:
Facilitate collaboration across teams and disciplines; lead small group efforts; resolve minor conflicts and ensure alignment on goals; encourage open communication and knowledge sharing.
Mentor entry-level designers and assist in building and presenting training materials; provide informal guidance to junior staff; share knowledge through one-on-one support.
Communicate with clients via email and meetings with moderate oversight; communicate directly with clients on routine matters; participate in meetings with moderate interaction; manage expectations and clarify design intent.
What You Bring
📊 Experience:
Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in distribution line design or a related technical field; candidates without a qualifying degree may be considered with 2 or more additional years of directly relevant experience.
Proficient knowledge of distribution line design principles; demonstrated ability to lead and execute complex distribution design tasks independently.
Proficient understanding of distribution industry hardware and materials; ability to determine material selection based on lifecycle cost, reliability, and environmental impact and specify hardware for moderately complex applications.
Demonstrated ability to manage complex distribution drawings and models; experience leading drawing coordination, ensuring standards compliance, and owning drawing packages for major projects.
Proficiency in single pole modeling software and basic understanding of multiple pole analysis software; basic familiarity with foundational analysis software and design tools.
Proficiency in GIS systems including working knowledge of survey data products; ability to support complex distribution design and planning decisions.
Ability to follow and apply multiple governing codes (NESC, NEC, IEEE) and client standards independently across projects of varying complexity.
Experience performing comprehensive quality checks on distribution design deliverables and participating in field visits with construction teams and clients.
Demonstrated ability to manage small work packages, coordinate with team members, mentor junior designers, and communicate directly with clients on routine matters.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam; ability to produce high-quality technical documentation and project communications.
