Your Role: 3D Drafter

Location: Covington, LA | Onsite

Ampirical is hiring 3D Drafters to support substation physical design — equipment arrangements, structures, and layouts — for our electric substation projects at the Covington, LA office. This posting spans three levels — apply at the level that matches your experience; duties and requirements scale up from there.

3D Drafter I

What You'll Do

• Support the drafting team by preparing basic 2D and 3D drawings for electric substation projects, working under close guidance from a lead designer or project engineer.

• Apply redlines and revisions provided by engineers.

• Draft plan and section views, equipment arrangements, and bills of material for substation physical packages under direction.

• Prepare finished working drawings for construction and relocation projects from detailed designs provided by designers and engineers.

• Learn and follow Ampirical's drafting standards and formatting guidelines, with support from an assigned mentor.

🎓 Education

• Associate's degree in Drafting (or related field), OR High School Diploma with hands-on AutoCAD coursework or experience.

📊 Experience

• Basic experience using AutoCAD to create technical drawings.

• Exposure to 3D modeling software (Inventor, 3D AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks) through coursework or hands-on project work, or equivalent hands-on experience in an electrical substation or utility environment.

⭐ Preferred / Nice-to-Have

• Familiarity with 2D AutoCAD.

• Exposure to P4A or a comparable substation design toolset.

• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

3D Drafter II

What You'll Do

• Prepare and contribute to detailed 2D and 3D drawing packages for electric substation projects under moderate supervision.

• Ensure drawings are properly formatted, annotated, and cross-referenced for construction and relocation use.

• Apply redlines and revisions from engineers, flagging inconsistencies as they come up.

• Begin reviewing peer drawings and suggesting corrections as part of internal QA/QC.

• Develop equipment and general arrangement drawings, bus and conductor layouts, grounding plans, and conduit and raceway routing.

🎓 Education

• Associate's degree in Drafting (or related field), OR High School Diploma with 1+ year of hands-on AutoCAD experience.

📊 Experience

• Moderate proficiency using AutoCAD to create technical drawings.

• Working experience with 3D modeling software (Inventor, 3D AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks), or equivalent hands-on experience in an electrical substation or utility environment.

⭐ Preferred / Nice-to-Have

• Experience with P4A.

• Experience with Autodesk Vault Basic or Vault Pro.

• Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam.

3D Drafter III

What You'll Do

• Perform complex 2D and 3D drafting assignments for electric substation applications with low supervision.

• Follow established technical specifications to prepare drawings and assist in design drafting.

• Interpret redline revisions and implement detailed corrections independently.

• Consult with engineers regarding drawing accuracy, design, and drafting standards.

• Mentor junior drafters on standards, formatting, and quality.

• Build complete physical design packages — general arrangements, plan and section views, foundation and structure details, grounding, and raceway — and perform clash detection and model coordination in Navisworks.

🎓 Education

• Associate's degree in Drafting (or related field), OR High School Diploma with 2+ years of hands-on AutoCAD experience.

📊 Experience

• Proficient in AutoCAD to create technical drawings.

• Proficient 3D modeling experience (Inventor, 3D AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks); SolidWorks experience considered comparable to Inventor. Hands-on P4A experience strongly preferred.

• Prior background working with electrical substations, in a mechanical or electrical discipline.

⭐ Preferred / Nice-to-Have

• Experience with Autodesk Vault Basic or Vault Pro.

• Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam.

💡 Skills (All Levels)

• Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and set priorities effectively.

• Detail oriented, with strong pattern recognition.

• Working knowledge of NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and client-specific drafting standards, including electrical clearance requirements.

• Comfortable working in a 3D model environment — Inventor, 3D AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, or P4Awith drawings generated from the model.

• Able to read and interpret one-lines, physical layouts, and engineering redlines.
