Your Role: Civil Engineer
The Substation Civil Engineer III – Foundation Focus is responsible for advanced engineering analysis and design of substation foundations, including equipment foundations, structure foundations, deep and shallow systems, and ground-supported structural elements. The engineer independently interprets geotechnical data, performs complex structural and foundation calculations, and develops complete foundation design packages. This role interfaces directly with clients, internal teams, and vendors and provides mentorship to junior engineers while supporting construction activities with moderate guidance.
What You’ll Do:
Prepare scopes of work, estimates, and technical documentation for foundation engineering on substation projects
Identify appropriate foundation types based on geotechnical conditions, environmental factors, and loading requirements
Perform advanced foundation engineering calculations including bearing capacity, settlement, uplift resistance, lateral resistance, structural load combinations, and equipment loading
Conduct structural analysis for substation equipment foundations and support structures
Develop foundation plans, sections, reinforcement details, and calculation packages for IFR/IFA/IFC deliverables
Interpret and analyze soil boring logs, geotechnical reports, and site investigation data with minimal oversight
Interface with internal engineering teams, project managers, clients, and vendors to communicate technical solutions and coordinate design decisions
Apply governing codes and standards independently (ASCE, ACI, AISC, AASHTO)
Perform peer checks on lower-level engineering work and carry out formal QC reviews with minimal correction needed
Mentor junior engineers on foundation engineering principles, analysis techniques, and software tools
Provide moderate field support including review of foundation excavations, reinforcement placement, and troubleshooting construction issues
Support construction teams by answering technical questions and providing limited field analysis under senior guidance
What You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
3+ years of foundation or structural engineering experience; 2 additional years accepted in lieu of FE certification.
Proficiency in foundation and structural analysis software (L‑Pile, RISA, Autodesk Inventor, etc.)
Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and interpretation of soil boring data
Experience designing foundations for utility, industrial, or infrastructure projects
Knowledge of industry standards including ASCE, ACI, AISC, and AASHTO
Ability to develop detailed foundation plans and calculation packages with minimal oversight
Proficiency in AutoCAD or Civil 3D; Bentley MicroStation or Bentley Substation experience is a plus
Strong skills in Microsoft Office and PDF markup tools (e.g., Bluebeam)
Additional Skills:
Engineer-in-Training (EIT / FE Certification) preferred
Engineer-in-Training (EIT / FE Certification) required, or additional 2 years of civil design experience in lieu of FE certification
