Your Role: Substation Apparatus and/or Relay Technician
What You’ll Do
- Perform acceptance, maintenance, and/or commissioning testing on substation equipment such as circuit breakers, power transformers, CTs, PTs, switches, bus systems, and protective relays (electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based).
- Conduct electrical and/or relay tests including insulation resistance, power factor (Doble), TTR, winding resistance, contact resistance, timing, SFRA, and end-to-end testing using GPS-synchronized equipment.
- Disassemble, inspect, and repair circuit breakers, disconnect switches, tap changers, and/or troubleshoot relay misoperations and equipment failures.
- Interpret and verify single-line diagrams, control wiring schematics, protection logic, and equipment drawings.
- Maintain accurate and detailed test reports, relay settings documentation, and as-built drawings.
- Operate and maintain test equipment such as Megger, Doble, Vanguard, Omicron, and other industry-standard devices.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, NETA guidelines, NERC standards, and customer specifications.
- Support SCADA/RTU interface verification and/or automation testing during substation commissioning or retrofits.
- Coordinate with engineers, electricians, utilities, and other field personnel to ensure accurate work execution.
- Travel to project sites throughout assigned regions (typically 50–75%), including overnight stays.
What you Bring
- 3+ years of experience in substation equipment testing and maintenance and/or relay testing and commissioning.
- Familiarity with substation equipment and relay manufacturers such as ABB, Siemens, GE, SEL, Basler, Mitsubishi, and others.
- Proficiency with high-voltage apparatus testing and/or protective relay testing using equipment like Omicron CMC, Doble F6150, and Megger.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, protection and control schematics, and manufacturer manuals.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and written/verbal communication abilities.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass drug and background screenings.
- Willingness to travel and work extended hours, including weekends, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Associate in Applied Science Degree – Substation and Relay Technology.
- NICET Level II or III Certification or equivalent field testing credentials.
- OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification.
- Experience working in energized substations under utility safety practices.
- Knowledge of utility protection schemes, NERC PRC standards, and IEEE/NESC codes.
- Experience with SCADA/RTAC integration and automation testing.
