Your Role: Substation Engineering Supervisor - Relay Settings - Remote
What You’ll Do
- Supervise, mentor, and train engineering staff in relay protection and control design.
- Identify and implement appropriate protection and control schemes for transmission and distribution substations.
- Select protection devices and ensure proper equipment sizing and specification.
- Prepare scopes of work, estimates, and conceptual designs for substation projects.
- Create and review drawing packages including wiring diagrams, schematics, protection panels, one-line, and three-line diagrams.
- Conduct power system studies including short circuit analysis, relay coordination, CT performance, and relay loadability.
- Utilize software tools such as ASPEN, ETAP, and AcSELerator to develop and validate protection settings.
- Perform load calculations for panels, battery systems, voltage drop, and other substation components.
- Support field personnel during construction and pre-inspection of turnkey substation projects.
- Ensure adherence to client standards and industry regulations (NERC/FERC).
- Interface with clients and vendors to ensure project alignment and technical accuracy.
- Provide technical guidance on relay settings schemes for various system topologies.
- Prepare and present technical topics for internal training and lunch-and-learn sessions.
- Perform quality control and peer reviews of settings calculations and fault analysis studies.
- Attend industry conferences and represent Ampirical in technical forums (e.g., IEEE).
What You Bring
🎓 Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
📊 Experience:
- 8+ years of protection and control design experience in the electric utility industry.
- Hands-on experience configuring SEL microprocessor relays; familiarity with other relay vendors and electromechanical relays is a plus.
💡 Skills:

- Strong understanding of SCADA, automation, testing, commissioning, and communication protocols (e.g., DNP, SEL).
- Experience with testing equipment such as Doble, OMICRON, or Megger.
- Proficiency in interpreting electrical drawings including single-line, three-line, and functional diagrams.
- Engineering supervision or project management experience preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to travel to client sites and attend technical conferences.
