Your Role: Substation Relay Technician - Remote
What You’ll Do
- Perform testing and calibration of protective relays (electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based) using test equipment such as Doble, Omicron, Megger, or equivalent.
- Conduct functional testing of protection and control schemes including differential, distance, overcurrent, breaker failure, reclosing, and transfer trip.
- Perform end-to-end testing using GPS-synchronized equipment.
- Interpret and verify wiring diagrams, control schematics, and protection logic.
- Maintain accurate and detailed test reports, relay settings documentation, and as-built drawings.
- Assist with troubleshooting and root cause analysis of relay misoperations and equipment failures.
- Support commissioning of new substations and retrofits, including SCADA and RTU interface verification.
- Ensure compliance with all safety procedures and NERC standards during field activities.
- Communicate and coordinate with customers, utilities, engineers, and other field staff.
- Travel to substations throughout assigned regions for testing and commissioning activities (typically 50–75%).
Preferred:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
- NICET Level II or III Certification or equivalent field testing credentials.
- Experience with SCADA/RTAC integration and automation testing.
What You Bring
- 3+ years of experience in relay testing or substation commissioning.
- Proficient with relay types including SEL, GE Multilin, Basler, ABB, and/or Siemens.
- Ability to read and interpret substation protection and control drawings.
- Experience using test equipment such as Omicron CMC, Doble F6150, Megger, or similar.
- Knowledge of utility protection schemes, NERC PRC standards, and IEEE/NESC codes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass drug and background screenings.
- Willingness to travel and work extended hours as needed.
