Your Role: Substation Relay Technician - Remote

What You’ll Do

• Perform testing and calibration of protective relays (electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based) using test equipment such as Doble, Omicron, Megger, or equivalent.
  
• Conduct functional testing of protection and control schemes including differential, distance, overcurrent, breaker failure, reclosing, and transfer trip.
  
• Perform end-to-end testing using GPS-synchronized equipment.
  
• Interpret and verify wiring diagrams, control schematics, and protection logic.
  
• Maintain accurate and detailed test reports, relay settings documentation, and as-built drawings.
  
• Assist with troubleshooting and root cause analysis of relay misoperations and equipment failures.
  
• Support commissioning of new substations and retrofits, including SCADA and RTU interface verification.
  
• Ensure compliance with all safety procedures and NERC standards during field activities.
  
• Communicate and coordinate with customers, utilities, engineers, and other field staff.
  
• Travel to substations throughout assigned regions for testing and commissioning activities (typically 50–75%).
  

Preferred:

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
• NICET Level II or III Certification or equivalent field testing credentials.
• Experience with SCADA/RTAC integration and automation testing.

What You Bring

• 3+ years of experience in relay testing or substation commissioning.
• Proficient with relay types including SEL, GE Multilin, Basler, ABB, and/or Siemens.
• Ability to read and interpret substation protection and control drawings.
• Experience using test equipment such as Omicron CMC, Doble F6150, Megger, or similar.
• Knowledge of utility protection schemes, NERC PRC standards, and IEEE/NESC codes.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass drug and background screenings.
• Willingness to travel and work extended hours as needed.
